Description

A late 17th-century house in Claughton, Lancashire, which has been divided into two separate dwellings and altered in the 19th century. The house is built of sandstone rubble on the ground floor, with brickwork above, and follows a lobby-entry plan. It is two storeys high with three main bays, plus a further bay to the right. The first-floor windows are of three lights, featuring timber mullions and glazing bars. Modern frames replace the original ground-floor windows, with two windows in the left-hand bay. Two small first-floor windows are set between the first and second bays, while another small stair window sits between the third and fourth bays. A gabled stone porch with carved bargeboards is situated between the first and second bays. Chimneys are located to the left of the porch and on the right-hand gable.

The left-hand dwelling, now a separate house, contains a room with a chamfered and stopped firehood bressumer, supported by two hearth posts. On the first floor, two original doors exist, one leading to a closet beside the firehood. This closet provides access to a cupboard within the former firehood area, which includes a seat, reputedly once used as a priest's hide. The right-hand house was inaccessible during the survey, but is believed to have a firehood bressumer, ovolo-moulded beams, and a cupboard within the rear wall of the hearth with a carved door. The building’s architectural details will be documented and illustrated in a forthcoming publication by Watson, R.C., and McClintock, M.E., concerning houses in the Claughton area.
