Description

Duckett's Farmhouse is a house, probably from the late 17th century, with some remains of a timber frame that may date back to the 16th century. The building has been altered over time and is constructed of sandstone rubble with a slate roof and brick chimneys. It has two storeys and a main range of two bays, with a one-bay cross-wing that projects to the right. The windows in the main range appear to be from the later 19th century and consist of three sashed lights with glazing bars, chamfered mullions, and chamfered stone surrounds. The windows in the cross-wing also have glazing bars and a central mullion. There is a door to the right of the left-hand bay, which features a chamfered stone surround. The chimneys are located on the left gable and to the right of the door.

While the interior was not accessible during the survey, it is known to contain remnants of a light scantling timber frame, including evidence of a jetty on the south wall of the cross-wing. According to researchers R.C. Watson and M.E. McClintock, who will include the building in an upcoming book on traditional houses in the Claughton area, the house likely started as an existing structure with clay or turf walls, to which a timber-framed cross-wing was added, divided into a buttery and a heated parlour. They also suggest that a lintel inscribed '1690', found in the farmyard, may indicate the date when the external walls were rebuilt in stone.
