Description

This is a house located on Back Street in Blackmore, dating from the early 17th century, with a later crosswing and 20th-century alterations including new windows and additions.

The exterior features whitewashed rubble walls and a roof that was originally thatched but is now tiled, with gable ends and brick stacks at either end. The house is one storey with attics and has an irregular arrangement of windows, including 20th-century two-light casements, some with added glazing bars, and a modern glazed porch. There are single-storey extensions to the east and west that are not of special interest.

The plan consists of a two-bay house with a cross passage and end chimneystacks running east to west, along with a later northern crosswing.

Inside, the ground floor east room contains an early 17th-century stone fireplace with an oak bressumer and axial beams featuring three-inch chamfers. On the western side of the cross passage, there is a high-quality plank and muntin partition. The western room has a larger stone fireplace with a four-centred chamfered oak bressumer that has a later plate shelf supported by brackets. This bressumer shows marks from rush lights and witch marks. The axial beams and floor joists in this room are also chamfered, with lambs tongue stops. The ground floor of the crosswing has unchamfered beams. The upper west room features a 17th-century chamfered door frame with a stop and a three-plank door with iron pintle hinges. The east room has a chamfered 17th-century door frame with lambs tongue stops. The original part of the house has very thick purlins, and the bases of the principal trusses are exposed. The northern wing includes a stilted truss.
