Description
This is a farm building dated 1632, located approximately 20 metres east of Holgate Farmhouse. Originally a house, it has been converted into a cow byre and features later extensions and alterations. The structure is built from coursed watershot sandstone rubble and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with a layout of 1:2 bays.
The original house section is on the right and includes quoins, a central board door set in a chamfered quoined ashlar surround, and a lintel with a triangular soffit inscribed with "RW 1632". There are window openings on each floor, with the ground floor window on the right converted into a doorway. The right gable has a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping, along with ashlar end stacks.
To the left, there is a mid to late 18th-century addition that features a stable door on the ground floor and a window on the first floor, along with a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping on the left gable. A single-storey outbuilding to the right is not considered of special interest.
Inside, there is a mid to late 18th-century ashlar fire surround in the ground-floor room to the left, a scar of a spiral staircase in the rear angle behind it, and collared roof trusses over the house.
