Description
The cowhouse at Upper Stanton Farm is a Grade II listed building constructed from roughly squared red sandstone rubble with dressed quoins and topped with a corrugated sheet metal roof. The structure retains three medieval walls and has been significantly extended to the west, likely in the 19th century. The junction of the medieval section and the later addition is evident in the stonework of the front elevation.
On the medieval part, there is a plain doorway on the right, accompanied by a small window to the left featuring a chamfered surround and an ogee head. To the left of this window, the 19th-century section includes a larger main entrance to the cowshed. The gable wall has a taking-in door for the hay loft above, while the rear wall is mostly blind, except for a small blocked chamfered lancet. The east gable, which is shared with the larger attached barn, retains a blocked altar window with a chamfered surround.
The only visible medieval feature is the holy water stoup located immediately to the left of the door. However, the door's position is unlikely to be original, as it would typically be expected at the west gable or at the west end, away from the altar. This suggests that the stoup was likely reset when the cowshed was extended. Inside, there is a 19th-century inserted floor for the hayloft supported by very roughly chamfered beams. The roof is mostly obscured but appears unremarkable.
