Description

Upper Stanton Farmhouse is a 17th-century building constructed from roughly squared and coursed red sandstone, topped with Welsh slate roofs. The farmhouse consists of two ranges that meet at right angles, with the main living spaces located in the block facing the road and a service wing positioned behind. The junction of these two blocks is filled by a single-storey lean-to featuring a catslide roof.

The main block is two-and-a-half storeys tall, with the ground floor being a lower 17th-century level. The road-facing elevation includes two windows on the ground floor and two gabled half-dormers above, all adorned with bargeboards and spike finials. The first-floor windows are situated in the gable ends, with two at each end and an attic window above. Most of these windows are 8 over 8 sashes with elliptical heads, except for one 4 over 4 sash in the attic of the right-hand gable. The gables also feature cusped bargeboards and a tall red brick chimney stack.

The rear wing contains two additional windows, with sashes on the lower level and casements above. It has a gable end stack and a small lean-to extension on the right side. The back of this wing is obscured by the catslide roof and includes only a roof-light.

During a resurvey in May 1997, only the ground floor was accessible. It appears that the farmhouse originally started as a two-unit house with a cross-passage, running parallel to the road. The left-hand room of this original structure still retains chamfered ceiling beams. There is evidence suggesting that a stair turret was once present at the back of the house. Although the Victorian farmhouse has undergone improvements and modernisation, much of its character is now reflective of the 20th century. A notable surviving feature is the bacon rack located in the kitchen.
