Description

Pont Rhys Powell Farmhouse is a largely 17th-century farmhouse, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of painted sandstone rubble, with roofs of stone tiles to the lower courses on the front slope, corrugated sheet metal above, concrete interlocking tiles to the rear slope, and concrete pantiles to the outshuts. The house comprises a main two-storey range, with a stable and granary attached in line to the right. An end bay to the left has both a front and rear outshut.

The front elevation is somewhat obscured by modern additions. The left-hand bay is hidden by a modern outshut with steel-framed casement windows. A catslide roof partially conceals the upper floor of the original building. A contemporary, gabled porch projects from the front door, with a single-storey gabled porch attached before the front door. The front door itself is a five-panel studded door with roll-moulded jambs and lintel, dated 1689. Above the door is a two-light casement window under a timber lintel, and a small two-light casement window is set into the ground floor of the porch. The next bay features a three-light timber-framed casement window below and a two-light one above. Two ridge stacks are present, one backing onto a cross passage and the other at the gable end to the left.

The rear elevation includes a dairy outshut with a catslide roof along the lower end, featuring modern steel windows. It has two windows on each floor to the left of the outshut, with a single-light window at the rear of the cross passage on the ground floor and a two-light window to its left. Above, there is a three-light and a two-light casement. The gable end has three tiers of plastic, double-glazed windows in elliptical heads, likely replacing early 19th-century sash windows, with garret casements above.

The interior presents complexities due to the numerous alterations. The front door opens into a lobby adjacent to the hall stack. To the left is a cross passage, set at a lower level, running between the front and rear outshuts, featuring roughly finished cross beams. The lower room, potentially a converted cowhouse, is featureless. The hall, once possibly two rooms, has chamfered beams with bar-and-scroll stops, and renewed floorboards. A firestair is located to the right, with a straight stone flight turning at right angles behind the fireplace and branching to the 'best bedroom' over the downhill room. This staircase, likely dating from 1689, developed from a more basic firestair. The 'best bedroom' features ceiling beams with wide chamfers and bar-and-scroll stops. There are several 17th-century plank doors.

The roof structure is a principal rafter roof with collars and trenched purlins, although significantly altered, with many timbers missing, particularly where the roof covering has been replaced with sheet metal. One section of the roof at the uphill end contains two raised cruck trusses with chamfered ties and bar-and-runout stops, possibly an alteration from 1689. A straight ladder stair with solid oak treads leads to the garret over the 'best bedroom’ from the left of the stack.
