Description

The lamp post on Station Parade is a street lamp dating from 1899 or later, with its lanterns replaced in the late 20th century. It features a tall, cast iron post with a cylindrical base that includes an access door adorned with the Harrogate coat of arms. Above the base, there are several decorative bands leading to a beaded ring from which a pair of acanthus leaves rise, clasping the flared bottom of the post. The post continues with four additional bands, including a flange and a crown of palm leaves, before becoming a plain circular column. This column reaches a square block that supports ball-ended ladder supports. The top of the post is bell-ended and carries further embossed decoration. Modern supports for the replacement light fittings are attached above this point, featuring scroll work made from steel instead of cast or wrought iron, with the pair of lanterns designed based on the early 20th century ‘Rochester’ style.
