Description
The Public Library, built around 1904 by H T Hare, is designed in the "Bankers' Georgian" style. It has two storeys and a semi-basement, featuring a two-bay front. The exterior is constructed of rusticated sandstone ashlar. The main bay is distinguished by two giant attached Ionic columns that rise from a basement podium, supporting an entablature with a blocking course and a centerpiece.
In the central aedicular window, which is set in an arched recess, there are coved reveals and a shell treatment on the arch, complete with a head on the keystone and flanking swags. Above the window cornice, there is a cartouche displaying the arms of Harrogate, flanked by seated putti. The basement features a wide segmental arched window. The entrance includes an architraved doorway with block dressings, keys, a cornice, and a lunette above, flanked by female allegorical figures. A plaque in the frieze of the main entablature is inscribed "Carnegie Library." A later extension was planned for the east end but was never built.
