Description

The lamp post outside 2 Dean Stanley Street is a gas street light that likely dates from the late 19th century, with an extension shaft and a Rochester-type lantern that was probably installed around 1930.

It is made of cast iron and features a glazed lantern constructed from iron, spun copper, and enamelled steel. The lamp post has a column adorned with acanthus leaves at the base and floral mouldings, leading to an extended fluted shaft topped with an Upright Rochester lantern. The lantern includes a circular drum and rain-shield made of copper, above an inverted six-mantle burner encased in a teardrop-shaped glass enclosure that has a drainage hole at its base and an enamelled steel reflector. This entire assembly is held in place by an iron cradle with two curved uprights extending from the clock box. However, these uprights have lost their original decorative ironwork scrolls, which were typical of earlier inter-war Rochester lanterns.
