North Lodge, South Lodge And Entrance Gates With Attached Railings To Newburgh Priory

North Lodge, South Lodge, and the entrance gates with attached railings to Newburgh Priory were built in the early 18th century for the 4th Viscount Fauconberg. The lodges are made of brick with ashlar sandstone dressings, and there is an ashlar sandstone wall along with wrought-iron gates and railings. The design is symmetrical, featuring a central gateway flanked by two lodges, each two storeys high and three bays wide.

A low wall with canted coping supports the railings, which are made of square bars topped with obelisk finials and urns on the standards. The central gates have an elliptical motif in the mid-rail and decorative scrollwork at the top, along with an overthrow displaying the Fauconberg coat of arms in intricate scrollwork. The gate posts are adorned with scrollwork panels.

The lodges have matching facades facing the road, featuring an ashlar plinth and brickwork in banded rustication. The ground floor has a 20-pane sash window set within a deep flat-arch of sandstone, and there is an ashlar band at the first floor level. The first floor features an oculus with a keyed architrave, a moulded cornice, and lead urns at the corners. The rear elevations also match, with a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor and a keyed oculus above.

The inner returns of the lodges are similar, with a studded board door and a 12-pane unequally-hung sash window on the ground floor, both under deep flat arches, and two keyed oculi on the first floor. The left return of the left lodge has three flat-arched windows on the first floor, with the outer two being blind and the central one a casement. The right return of the right lodge features three round-arched openings with keyed architraves on the first floor, where the outer ones are blind and the central one is a sash window. Together, the gates, railings, and lodges create a very elegant entrance to Newburgh Priory. The gates have the emblem of their makers stamped on the bars.
