Description
North Lodge, including gates and railings, is an early 19th-century building that was remodelled around 1864 for Sir Henry Fairfax. It is a single-storey, stepped, three-bay gabled lodge featuring overhanging eaves, decorative bargeboarding pierced with trefoils, and ornate thistle finials. The structure is made of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone rubble with polished ashlar dressings, and it has a base course. The margins are chamfered with corbelled chamfer-stops, and Tudor hoodmoulds are present.
On the south elevation, the central gabled entrance bay has a lugged door surround. To the left, there is a slightly advanced gable with a canted window that has a swept roof and an 'HF' monogram panel above it. To the right, there is a bipartite window with a stone mullion.
The windows are made of plate glass and four-pane timber frame sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there is a central ridge stack with chamfered corners and clay cans. The building features cast-iron rainwater goods.
The gates and railings consist of fine, ornate wrought-iron entrance gates adorned with floral and scrolled motifs. The slender, cylindrical iron gate piers have acorn finials. The quadrant railings curve gracefully and terminate with pyramidal capped ashlar piers at the outer arms.
