Description
The Old Bridge at Drygrange, designed by Alexander Stevens Snr, was built between 1778 and 1780. This late 18th century road bridge features a central segmental archway that is 105 feet wide, flanked by round arches measuring 55 feet each, spanning the River Tweed. There is a smaller accommodation arch at the south abutment. The bridge is constructed from red sandstone for the spandrels, with red and buff sandstone used for the parapet and foundations, and narrow coursed whinstone for decorative panels. The rough-hewn pier foundations are tied with iron cramps and support curved and pointed cutwaters at the central arch. The spandrel faces include recessed circular panels adorned with urn ornaments. A dentilated string course runs along the bridge, while triangular supporting piers are enhanced with quatrefoil medallions and end in angled refuges at road level. The coped parapet features pyramidal finials at both approaches.
