Description

The Almshouses in Coxwold Village were originally established as the Poor Men's Hospital for 10 individuals in 1662, with additional endowments made in 1626 by Thomas, Earl of Fauconberg. Currently, they serve as 5 almshouses. The building was restored in 1962 for Mrs. Malcolm Wombwell by architect Trenwith Wills. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof at the front and 20th-century pantiles at the rear.

This single-storey structure features one dormer window and a bellcote above the porch at the front, along with four 20th-century dormers at the rear in an outshut, arranged in a 3:1:3 bay configuration. The central projecting porch has a segmental-arched opening made of ashlar, complete with a string course, imposts, and a recarved date of 1662 on the keystone. Above the porch is the Fauconberg coat of arms.

The dormer has a 3-light window with a dripmould, and the gable displays a lion couchant and a crown on a panel, featuring shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, along with a timber bellcote set back on the ridge. On the ground floor, from left to right, there is a 2-panel door in a triangular-headed doorway set within a square-headed chamfer, followed by a 3-light casement window with a dripmould, another door as previously described, another 3-light window, and a final door matching the earlier ones. The building is adorned with shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, and it has corniced ashlar stacks at both ends and to the right of each window on the left, as well as to the left of each window on the right.
