Description
The Sterne Memorial is a tombstone dating from around 1768, located in the fourth bay on the south side of the nave of the Church of St Michael in Coxwold. It was moved to its current position in 1969. The memorial commemorates Reverend Laurence Sterne, who served as the perpetual curate of Coxwold from 1760 to 1768. It features a white stone slab with a wave-shaped head and includes a long inscription about Sterne as a writer. Originally, the tombstone was erected by two brother freemasons in Bayswater churchyard, as Sterne passed away in Bond Street, London. When that churchyard was cleared for redevelopment in 1969, his remains and the tombstone were relocated to Coxwold.
