Description
These are almshouses located at 62 to 72 Church End, built in 1839 and endowed by James Waterhouse Smith Esquire. The building features brown brick with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. It consists of six single-cell dwellings, all on one storey, with a total of six windows. The central bay has a pediment and contains a passage that leads to the rear, providing access to two dwellings from a projecting porch that also has a pediment. The other dwellings have direct access to the street. The doorways are Tudor-arched, and the windows are two-light mullions with diamond panes. All openings are topped with drip moulds. The porch and pediment have stone coping and a ball finial, with kneelers supporting the porch. There are ridge stacks present as well. The building has had 20th-century extensions added to the rear.
