SINNINGTON CHURCH LANE (east side) Chest tomb and railings approximately 1.75 metres east of All Saints Church

Chest tomb and railings. 1822. For James Smelt. Tomb of sandstone ashlar with cast-iron railings. Tomb sides are recessed between concave reveals enriched with foliate reliefs; the ends are convex. Sides and ends contain raised oval panels within patterned spandrels. Angle volutes enriched with foliate reliefs. Panel on south side contains inscription: IN REMEMBRANCE OF JAMES SON OF THE REV: WILLIAM SMELT + ELIZABETH GRUNDEN WHO DIED MAY THE 29th 1822 AGED 27 YEARS Tomb enclosed within turned railings,approximately 1.1 metres high with acorn tips, between chamfer-stopped square-section standards with urn finials.
