Description
The chest tomb and railings, located approximately 1.75 metres east of All Saints Church, date from 1822 and were made for James Smelt. The tomb is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features cast-iron railings. The sides of the tomb are recessed between concave reveals that are decorated with foliate reliefs, while the ends are convex. Both the sides and ends have raised oval panels set within patterned spandrels, and the angle volutes are also embellished with foliate reliefs. An inscription on the south side reads: "IN REMEMBRANCE OF JAMES SON OF THE REV: WILLIAM SMELT + ELIZABETH GRUNDEN WHO DIED MAY THE 29th 1822 AGED 27 YEARS." The tomb is enclosed by turned railings that stand approximately 1.1 metres high, featuring acorn tips and supported by chamfer-stopped square-section standards with urn finials.
