Description
40 and 42 Westgate are a pair of cottages located in Old Malton, dating from the late 18th century, with some alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble and feature a pantile roof with brick stacks at the right end and left of center. The cottages are two stories high and have a three-window front.
The entrance to No. 40 is a part-glazed door on the right, while No. 42 has a 20th-century board door on the left. Between the doors, there is a two-light small-pane sliding sash window, and a 20th-century single-light window is located at the right end. On the first floor, the windows are also two-light small-pane sliding sashes. All windows, except for the 20th-century one, have painted stone sills, and the ground-floor openings feature keyed wedge lintels.
