Description
Whitwell Hall Annexe is a stable block and chapel that has been converted for hotel use. It likely dates from the early 19th century and features an added sundial dated 1864. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and has a Westmorland slate roof. It has a U-shaped plan with the former chapel located in the central range. The structure is two storeys tall, with single-storey extensions on the wings.
The central range consists of seven bays arranged in a 3-1-3 pattern. Each wing has one window on the first floor. The central bay projects forward and includes a board door with a divided overlight beneath a Tudor arch and hoodmould. The outer bays are arcaded with Tudor-arched recesses that contain casements with triangular overlights, except for a board door located towards the centre right.
The left wing features two-light mullion Tudor-arched windows, board doors, and a tall carriage arch. The right wing has a wide open arch, two-light windows, and a coach entrance. On the first floor of the central range, there are two-light Tudor-arched mullion windows throughout, except for a casement window in the left wing.
At the top of the building, there is a central octagonal bell-turret with a cupola, flanked by pinnacles and featuring the sundial. The gable coping and end stacks are present on the wings. On the rear right facade, there is a 19th-century three-light window with Perpendicular tracery, which is the only remaining evidence of the building's former chapel function.
