Description
The Monument to the 7th Earl of Carlisle, designed by F.P. Cockerell, was erected in 1869 and is made of granite and sandstone ashlar. It features a flight of steps leading to a platform adorned with helmeted helms at the corners. Additional steps rise to the base of the column, which has rusticated quoins and an inscription reading "VIIth EARL OF CARLISLE" along with a memorial plaque above. The tall column is decorated with two garlands hanging down its shaft on the north and south sides. The capital of the column is richly carved, featuring scrolls, heads, and acanthus leaves.
