Description
The Church of St John Evangelist is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1858 and 1860 by architect G.E. Street. It is built from sandstone ashlar and features a plain tile roof. The church has a two-bay nave with a south porch, a two-bay chancel, a tower to the south, and a vestry to the north, all designed in the High Victorian Gothic style.
On the west front, there are four lancet windows with cusped heads beneath a rose window that contains cinquefoils. The pointed south door is adorned with fine decorative wrought-iron hinges and is flanked by attached shafts with stylised foliage capitals. The nave features three-light pointed windows. The two-stage tower has a semi-circular staircase turret on the west side and cusped lancets. It also includes twin belfry openings with plate tracery roundels above and is topped with a broach spire that has lucarnes.
The chancel is fitted with two-light pointed windows that have quatrefoil roundels, while the vestry has three cusped lancets beneath a quatrefoil roundel. The east end of the church showcases a three-light window with three traceried roundels in the head. Inside, the church contains a five-panel reredos, a pulpit, and a font, all featuring marble inlay.
