Description
No 1 on Sutton Road is a factory that was formerly the Thirsk Union Workhouse, built in 1838. It is constructed of brown brick and features a new slate roof with hipped cross wings. The building is two storeys high and exhibits a symmetrical, late classical style. The central section has five bays and slightly projecting one-bay wings. There is a stucco entablature at the eaves and a cill band on the first floor. The side wings are defined by brick pilasters. The entrance has a plain wooden doorcase with brackets and a flat hood, leading to a panelled door with a radial fanlight. The ground floor windows in the central section have gauged round arches and replaced sashes with glazing bars. The side wings feature segmental arched windows set within segmental relieving arches. On the first floor, there are squat openings with replacement single hung windows that also have glazing bars.
