Description

This railway signal box was built in 1891 by the Midland Railway. It was relocated and restored between 1997 and 1999. The building is constructed of timber with a Welsh slate roof.

The signal box is two bays wide and two storeys high, featuring a shallow-pitched hipped roof. The upper-floor operating room has continuous glazing facing west (towards the tracks) and on its two ends; the rear is solid. A doorway on the north side is accessed via an external timber staircase, which also leads to a balcony-walkway around the front of the box for window cleaning. The ground floor has windows on the ends only. The signal box is in its original, restored condition, with timber, single-glazed windows divided by glazing bars. The upper-floor windows are horizontal sliding sashes. Areas of plain walling are finished with horizontal weather-boarding. The roof retains its turned-timber spike-finials. A modern reproduction name board reading "Settle Station" is fixed to the front.

Inside, the signal box has been fully restored, including a Midland Railway lever frame with 20 levers (interlocking mechanisms housed within the operating room) and Absolute Block Instruments and bells. The ground-floor room retains counterbalances.

Adjacent to the signal box, immediately to the north, is a twin-armed semaphore signal. To the south is a short, isolated section of track with a point blade, track warning detonators, and a ground signal, all connected to levers inside the signal box to allow for demonstrations of its operation.
