Description
Settle Social Club, formerly known as Ashfield House, is a social club that dates back to the early 19th century. The building is finished in stucco and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and features five bays. The ground floor is designed with banded rustication and includes a central semi-circular Tuscan porch supported by four columns, with the outer two being engaged. The porch has a dentilled cornice and is flanked by narrow rectangular lights beside 20th-century doors. The four ground floor windows are adorned with keystones and voussoirs and contain sash windows. The upper floors have 20th-century casements and are topped with a dentilled cornice and gable end ridge stacks. On either side of the main structure, there are two-storey, one-bay recessed wings that are likely slightly later than the main house. Each wing features projecting quoins and one window on each floor. The house was built for the Settle banker William Birbeck, who lived from 1722 to 1838.
