Description
The building known as Spar, located at 1 Duke Street in Settle, is a former inn that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The building has three storeys and three bays. The entrance features a moulded architrave and an open pediment supported by cyma reversa brackets, along with a fanlight hood.
To the left and right of the entrance are late 19th and 20th-century shopfronts, with a late 19th-century entrance on the right that includes a wooden architrave. The central first-floor area has a warehouse door with moulded check pieces and brackets supporting the lintel, along with a projecting wooden hood that has a lead coved design. The windows on the left and right have moulded surrounds and sashes with glazing bars. The building also features projecting quoins, modillioned eaves, and a ridge stack on the left side.
The facade facing Duke Street is finished in stucco, with an entrance on the left and a shopfront from around the 1970s on the right. There are two windows on both the first and second floors, with the second-floor windows cut into the modillions at the eaves. The hipped roof has two stacks.
