Description
The Town Hall, designed by George Webster of Kendal, is located in Settle Market Place and was built in 1832. This building is in the Gothic Revival style and features rubble construction with stone dressings and a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has six bays. The entrance on the south side, known as Cheapside, includes three gabled sections, with the central section projecting and each section being two bays wide. A central porch features three arches with two-centre heads, flanked by doors on either side that also have two-centre heads. These doors are accompanied by a three-light mullioned and transomed window with a two-centre head. Similar windows and entrances are found in the shops to the left and right.
A datestone inscribed 'ERECTED 1832' is present, styled similarly to that at Taitlands in Stainforth. The upper floors showcase various details in the early 17th century style, including chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with dripmoulds, as well as stepped and decorated gables with finials. The building has ridge stacks on both sides. The remaining facades feature three gables and two-light windows on the ground floor, except for the east side, which has had its mullions and transoms removed and replaced with plate glass. The west entrance on Duke Street has been blocked to provide access to later conveniences in the basement. Above this entrance, there is a central oriel window on the first floor, a clock above it in a stepped gable, and a bell capped by a gabled hood with a finial. The north facade, facing the Market Place, includes a right-hand oriel window on the first floor. The Town Hall is prominently situated at the southern end of the Market Place.
