Description
The building known as No. 6 Duke Street, formerly part of the Commercial Hotel, is now occupied by shops and dates back to 1774. It features watershot masonry with pointed stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The structure is two storeys high and consists of four bays. The leftmost bay has a coach entrance framed by milled stone, with rusticated jambs, a round-headed arch, and a dated keystone. There is a 20th-century shop front and entrance for the Co-op, as well as a 20th-century door for Anthony Shaw on the right. The four upper floor windows have plain surrounds with projecting sills and 20th-century casements. The building also has projecting quoins, a heavy eaves cornice, and a late 19th-century glazed dormer. There is a gable end ridge stack and an additional stack to the right of the carriage entrance. This building is included for its group value.
