Description
31 High Street is a building that likely started as an inn and is now used as a shop and offices. It dates from the 16th century but was re-fronted in the late 18th or early 19th century. The structure is timber framed with lath and plaster infill, and brick, with the front partly faced in colourwashed brick and a section above the carriage arch plastered. It features a simple plaster cornice and paired Ionic modillions. The slate roof has projecting eaves and a brick ridge stack. The building is L-shaped, with three storeys and a two-window range. The mid-19th century shop front includes a half-glazed door with an overlight in a moulded wood surround, two canted bays with glazing bars, and a continuous fascia. There is a high carriage arch to the right. The windows are sashes, and the first floor has a bow window with a 16-pane sash in a moulded wood surround. The second floor is low, with a window above the carriage arch between levels. Inside the carriage arch, the left wall shows close studding and a blocked four-centred arched doorway with sunk spandrels. At the rear, there is some close studding and a late 19th or 20th-century brick wing. The interior features exposed massive framing with jowled posts, 16th-century carved panelling, and a six-panelled door from the 16th or 17th century with a spring catch.
