Description
36A and 36B Queen Street is a mid-19th century building, likely a refronting of an earlier structure. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and basement, all finished in stucco. The building features a moulded cornice and frieze, with rusticated quoins. The attic serves as an extra storey above the entablature, while the ground floor is also rusticated.
The façade has a two-window front with sash windows framed by architraves. The first-floor windows are eared and have cornices above them. To the left of the entrance is a panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight, and the architrave has imposts with a scrolled keystone. There are flanking panelled strips and elaborate console brackets supporting a pediment above. The right side features a four-storey canted bay.
The upper floors of this building are part of the Castle Hotel, which includes Nos 35 and 36. The property is listed for its group value and is complemented by heavy cast iron area railings. All the listed buildings on the east side of Queen Street form a cohesive group.
