Description
This is a memorial sarcophagus located approximately 5 metres north-east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Hornby. It dates from the early 19th century and was created for the Duke of Leeds. The sarcophagus is made of sandstone ashlar and has a rectangular shape that tapers towards the bottom. Its raised panelled top features fielded panels on the longer sides. The east side bears an inscription commemorating Stephen Walton, who died in 1817, and Martha Greaves, who died in 1820, described as "Good & faithful Servants at Hornby Castle." This inscription is flanked by fluted pilasters. The shorter ends of the sarcophagus also have smaller fielded panels, each flanked by fluted pilasters.
