Description
The tomb with sarcophagus is located in the churchyard of the former Church of St Mary. It features a sarcophagus made of white limestone ashlar, designed in the shape of a wine cooler and resting on a larger plinth. Each side of the plinth has a sunk panel, with diagonally projecting corners that support large volutes. The rim of the sarcophagus is decorated with egg-and-dart moulding, and its coped lid is topped with a large fluted boss. On the south-western face, there is a brass plaque added during a recent restoration by Tintern Community Council, which records a previously eroded inscription. The plaque reads:
"Richard White son of George White of New Weir in the County of Hereford Gent. Died October 30th 1765 aged 67 years whose amiable temper and hospitality called to the sequestered spot many of the first rank and character. Inoffensive and benevolent he lived without an enemy and died deplored by all."
