Description
The building is a Gothick folly, now in ruins, dating from the early 19th century. It was commissioned by the 6th Duke of Leeds of Hornby Castle. Constructed from sandstone and lined with brick, it has one storey plus a basement. The east side features ashlar stonework with three bays, including a central canted bay that has a pointed-arched doorway set on five steps, flanked by matching windows. The tops of the arches are adorned with traceried gables, and the basement windows are quatrefoils within pointed arches. The parapet is decorated with triangular crenellations and corner pinnacles.
On the west side, the building is made of coursed rubble and has two upper-floor windows. It has an offset plinth, and at the basement level, there is a four-centred arched doorway on the right and two square window openings under deep lintels on the left. The upper level features tall pointed-arched windows with quoined surrounds. A string course runs to the overhanging ashlar parapet, similar to that on the east side. The museum once housed a collection of stuffed local birds and animals, and the basement served as the residence for the night-watchman and his family.
