Description
16 and 18 Market Place are two houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They date from the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of painted brick, with the right return in English garden-wall bond, and feature painted quoins and a timber eaves cornice. There are brick end stacks on a pantile roof. The front of the building is three stories high and has four windows. The ground floor has a modern double shop front with a continuous fascia and cornice supported by plain columns, with an entrance hall door located to the left of center between the two shops. The upper floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with the first-floor windows having painted stone sills and being taller than those on the second floor, which have a raised sillband. Inside, there is a quarter-turn open-string staircase featuring shaped tread ends, slender turned balusters, and a moulded handrail that is wreathed at the foot.
