Description

12 Swan Road is a lodging house dating to approximately 1815. It was built for Jonathan Shult, the owner of the adjacent Swan Inn, and served as his residence and accommodation for important guests. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and a slate hipped roof with overhanging eaves supported by wooden brackets. It features two wall stacks and has a square plan. The three-storey structure has a plinth and a band at the second floor level. The south front is characterized by a central projecting porch with a pediment. The porch has two columns with baseless fluted shafts and unusual Egyptian-style capitals. A 20th-century door with a fanlight is flanked by single sash windows with moulded ashlar surrounds. Above are three further sashes, and above again three smaller sashes, all with margin lights and glazing bars. A two-storey wing extends to the rear.
