Description
This is a terrace of fifteen cottages located on Town Street, Old Malton. The terrace dates to the late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble, with brick arches over the ground floor openings. There are eight brick ridge stacks serving the pantile roof. The design incorporates a direct-entry plan.
The building presents a continuous two-storey, fifteen-window frontage. Each cottage features a front door, most of which have been replaced in the 20th century, although they are paired except for the door at number 95, which is at the right-hand end. The ground floor windows are originally two-light, two-over-six sliding sashes, of which original examples remain at numbers 75, 77, 83, 85 and 89. Later replacements include late 19th-century four-pane hung sashes and 20th-century small-pane casements. First-floor windows generally match the ground floor windows, except at number 67, which retains an original two-over-six sliding sash. All ground floor window and door openings are topped with segment-arched details.
The terrace is noted for its length, its semi-rural location, and its relatively unaltered state of preservation.
