Description

The Lower Summer House is a house, likely dating from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of large dressed stone with a stone slate roof. The original plan comprised one large room at the east end, with two rooms adjacent to it. The south front features a string course that acts as a hoodmould over the three ground floor windows. These windows are double-chamfered, and while they now have two, three, and one light respectively, they were originally of eight, twelve, and four lights and all previously contained transoms. The first floor windows are also double-chamfered, with three and four lights. The rear elevation has similar windows of three, two, and three lights to the ground floor, and two of three lights above. A blocked, chamfered doorway with a Tudor hood is visible in the east gable, while the west gable displays two large chimneybreasts that merge into a single stack at the ridge. One of these chimneybreasts is largely concealed by a rear extension, which abuts one of the rear windows; this extension features a three-light, chamfered stone mullion window at the first floor.

Internally, the larger room has been partitioned and now contains a square stone fireplace. The beams above the fireplace are pieced together, suggesting it replaces a larger, earlier feature. The smaller rooms have Tudor arched doorways leading off the main room. A Tudor-arched fireplace of similar shape is found in the northern room, and another is located in the southern room on the first floor.
