Description

The Snowden Memorial is a memorial cairn built in 1937. It is made of mortared sandstone rubble and has a rectangular shape. Embedded in the cairn is a black stone tablet that commemorates the death of Philip Snowden, who was the first Viscount Snowden of Ickornshaw, a statesman and Chancellor of the Exchequer, on 15 May 1937. Philip Snowden was born in Middleton and took his title from Ickornshaw, both of which are located in the same parish.
