Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, now divided into flats, were built in 1903 and designed by A A Gibson of Harrogate for R S Palliser. The villas are constructed of red brick and render with ashlar dressings and have plain tile roofs, along with five brick stacks. They are two storeys high with an attic and a deep basement. The facades are symmetrical. The front of 2 Spring Grove has a central, two-storey canted bay with ashlar quoins, an ashlar coped parapet, and large ball finials. A recessed, segment-headed doorway features a stained glass 9-panel door with overlight, and a dentilated wooden hood supported on brackets. To either side of the bay are single leaded lights. Above this, a segment-headed, two-light mullion window is flanked by single, flat-headed windows. To the left is a shallow, square bay with a five-light window, above which are two two-light casement windows. To the right, three sets of French windows are sheltered by a wooden verandah with square, chamfered pillars and a plain tile roof, above two two-light casement windows. In the gable above are two three-light casement windows, beneath a continuous plain tile hood. The rear facade features a projecting canted bay topped with a glazed conservatory. The facade of 9 Springfield Avenue is identical and symmetrical, with painted ashlar dressings. The interior is reported to contain high-quality, contemporary oak fittings, including fireplaces with ornate inglenook fire surrounds, panelled doors and cupboard doors with stained glass, panelling, a staircase, and stained glass windows.
