Description
This is a house and shop, likely dating from the 16th century, with additions from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. It is timber-framed with a facade of reddish-brown brick, some areas cement-rendered and colour-washed. The roof is covered in pantiles. The building follows a lobby-entry plan with extensions to the rear. It is two storeys high with two windows on the first floor. A plinth is present. The left-hand side features a 19th-century shop front with pilasters, containing later windows with fluted brackets and a hood. A four-panel door is positioned centrally, accompanied by an iron boot scraper set into the plinth. The windows are renewed tripartite Yorkshire sash windows with single panes. The roof has a swept profile with end stacks, and a catslide at the rear. The interior reveals evidence of the original timber-framed construction. The North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report, No. 806, provides further information.
