Description

Cawood Bridge is a swing bridge that opened on 31st July 1872. It features central plaques on either side that read, "W. H. NICHOLSON, ESQ. / CHAIRMAN OF THE / CAWOOD BRIDGE COMPANY. / ROBERT HODGSON, ESQ. / ENGINEER. / T. B. NELSON, ESQ. / JOHN BUTLER, ESQ. / CONTRACTORS." The bridge is constructed of iron with timber cutwaters on the central piers and a gallery. It has five bays of segmental-arched girders with lattice work and railings between them, forming a parapet that supports horizontal girders at road level. There is an iron lamp base located between the second and third bays, and a tow path gate between the fourth and fifth bays. The central bay, which is the highest and has the greatest span, opens by revolving on a large disc supported by eight columns. At either end of the open span, there are iron lamps mounted on wooden buttressing.
