Description
Ox Leys Farmhouse is a house built in the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed sandstone and has a Westmorland slate roof. The central entry has been altered and is now a 12-pane fixed window set beneath a fanlight in a round-arched door-case, which features square-section fluted pilasters. This is flanked by 16-pane sash windows, each with a fixed 8-pane panel below. The first and second floors also have 16-pane sash windows, all with flat brick arches above. The eaves are supported by paired consoles that hold the drainpipe, and the gables have coping with shaped kneelers and end stacks.
Inside, there is a fine open-string staircase with carved tread ends, square-section balusters, and decorative openwork beneath the handrail. The door frames are fluted with rosettes at the corners, and the principal rooms have six fielded-panel doors. The main bedroom features a fluted fire surround that contains a basket grate decorated with swags, and the attic doors have H-L hinges.
