BOLTON-ON-SWALE BOLTON-ON-SWALE SE 29 NE 5/7 Jenkins Obelisk approximately 10 metres west of Church of Saint Mary 4.2.69 GV II

Memorial. Dated 1743, commemorating acknowledgement that Henry Jenkins, d1670, had attained age of 169. Sandstone ashlar. Monument approximately 5 metres high. Square base forming dado. Pyramidal obelisk with coved diamond finial. On west side of base, inscription "HENRY IENKINS". On east side of base, inscription "This monument was Erected by CONTRIBUTION In ye year 1743 to ye memory of HENRY IENKINS". The longevity of Henry Jenkins, although not proven by documentary sources, was established by his eye- witness accounts of well-known events, making him the most long-lived English person ever recorded. He was born and lived at Ellerton-on Swale.
