Description

The Angel Inn is a coaching inn dating from the mid-18th century, with some parts reconstructed in the 20th century. The building features a mix of roughcast and rendered surfaces, topped with plain tile roofs. It has an L-shaped plan and consists of two storeys. The main elevation facing Low Green has a five-bay range from the 18th century, which is roughcast. The return range facing High Street has a total of six bays, with the first bay being blank and the rest rendered in the 20th century.

On the Low Green elevation, the ground floor includes a basket-arched carriageway with a tripartite keystone in the first bay, while the second bay is blank. The other openings have ashlar surrounds with tripartite keystones. There is a part-glazed door with a three-pane overlight in the third bay, and sash windows with glazing bars throughout. A hipped roof is present on the right side, with a ridge stack located between the second and third bays.

The elevation to High Street features a return range from the Low Green block, which has one bay of sash windows with glazing bars in ashlar surrounds with tripartite keystones. The 20th-century range has a ground floor that projects forward with a flat roof, and the bays are divided by paired Tuscan pilasters. The first floor has 16-pane sash windows with shutters. The building is finished with concrete coping and kneelers, and brick stacks are located at the ends and between the second and third bays.
