Description

The Black Horse Inn is a coaching inn that dates back to the early 18th century, with extensive additions from the early 19th century and some alterations in the 20th century. The building features roughcast render on the front and sides, coursed limestone rubble at the rear, and has ashlar limestone and brick chimneys topped with a stone slate roof.

It consists of a long two-storey range with an attic and a two-storey block at the rear. The front elevation displays three gables with a mix of window styles, generally featuring single windows in the attic of the gables and two windows below. The sash windows include a combination of early 19th-century six-pane and later 19th-century four-pane designs, along with some 20th-century small-paned casements. The central gable has a long hoodmould over the upper floor and a hoodmould over the attic sash. The left gable also has a single attic sash with a hoodmould similar to the others.

There are two 20th-century gabled porches towards the centre of the front elevation. A single ridge-mounted brick chimney is positioned between the centre and right gables, while tall ridge-mounted ashlar chimneys on the left-hand gable indicate the extent of the early 19th-century addition to this range. At the rear, there is a parallel-roofed early 19th-century addition featuring segmental-arched casement windows. To the right, there is a full attic gable at the rear of the main range. The building is located at a focal point of the central village crossroads.
