Description
The North Nibley War Memorial is a war memorial dating from around 1920, constructed from local oolitic limestone.
The memorial features a wheel cross with flared arms, set atop a tapering octagonal column. The shaft ends in a four-sided base with chamfered shoulders. The base bears the inscription: "TO THE / GLORY OF GOD / & IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF / NORTH NIBLEY / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 / DULCE ET DECORUM EST / PRO PATRIA MORI." The other sides of the base list the names and regiments or services of the 20 men from the village who died in the First World War. The ranks, names, and services of the 2 men who fell in the Second World War are inscribed on the face of the plinth below the main inscription. The structure is positioned on an octagonal, three-stepped platform, with a narrow, paved apron at ground level.
