Description
The White Hart is a former inn that has been converted into a detached house. It has parts that date back to the 15th century, but the majority of the building is from the 18th century, with some 19th-century additions. The structure is made of random rubble limestone and was originally covered with roughcast render. It features brick chimneys and roofs made of plain tiles, pantiles, and Welsh slate.
The building is two stories high with a cellar, and it has a two-story south wing that forms an L-shape, which includes a single-story addition at the angle. The front of the building has a north wing that projects forward to the left, featuring a hipped roof and a two-window arrangement with 12-pane sash windows that have segmental brick arches, now rendered over. There is an off-centre cellar door with a timber lintel, and the stone quoins and quality of the masonry suggest that this part of the building has earlier origins.
To the right, the south wing has scattered casement windows with timber lintels and an off-centre doorway that is topped with a flat porch hood and a glazed door. The addition at the angle also has a hipped roof and a tall brick chimney. The south end of the building has a gable with some roughcast render and single window casement fenestration with timber lintels. On the north side, there is a doorway with a timber lintel and a plank door, along with a single upper floor casement window.
Inside, it is said that there is a medieval fireplace. The White Hart is of considerable historic interest as it was the first inn on the medieval route from Berkeley Castle to London, originally built for this purpose.
