Description

The Ship Inn is a coaching inn dating back to the 17th century, with later alterations and additions. It features a mix of rubble and rendered surfaces, topped with a slate and pantiled roof that has brick gable stacks. The building has an F-plan layout, with the main block standing two storeys high and featuring a symmetrical arrangement of windows. To the left, there is a lower two-storey projecting wing that was originally open at the ground floor, showcasing round-headed arches with gauged brick heads, stone keys, and impost blocks, all painted. This area now has 20th-century windows set in recesses, all with glazing bars. The first floor includes 19th-century two-pane sashes, while the right side features a pair of 18th-century sashes in exposed boxes. The ground floor windows on the canted bay have a cornice and parapet, and similar windows on the left wing have a decorative frieze, both also with glazing bars.

The north wing has a ground floor sash in an exposed box, a two-light mullioned window with leaded lights, a blocked door, a three-light window, and a 16-pane sash on the first floor. The single-storey south wing includes a similar two-light window and a 20th-century door. The rear of the building has two irregular gables on the main block and one on the north wing, all featuring timber verges. The ground floor has a canted bay and a sash in an exposed box on the first floor, along with other irregular 20th-century windows and extensions. Inside, the inn retains chamfered beams, a stone flagged floor, and one 17th-century door with strap hinges on the first floor.
