Description
A pair of attached houses dating from the late 17th century, significantly refronted in the early 19th century with later additions and alterations. The houses are built of rendered rubble with stone dressings, featuring double Roman and pantiled roofs with gable stacks on Alveston Old House and a plain tiled roof on Dial House.
Alveston Old House presents a south front of two storeys with five windows, all sash windows. Single-storey, flat-roofed pavilions extend from each side, each with a single window, finished with coping. A central panelled and glazed door is topped by a pediment supported on brackets, with canted bays to each side, featuring a modillion cornice and eight-pane sashes. A cornice and parapet with coping complete the front. The rear elevation is three storeys high with two windows; the windows are mostly 16-pane sashes, with the exception of ground floor three-light casements featuring chamfered mullions. 20th-century doors and an extension are present on the left side.
Dial House has a north front of three storeys and two windows, including sash windows. The ground floor contains a 20th-century casement on the left and a 20th-century bow window on the right. A central panelled and glazed door is topped by a modillion cornice. The first floor has a triple window to the right, with a central sash and four panes on each side. A single-storey wing extends to the west, containing two sashes. The west side of Dial House features a shaped gable and coped verges, with two windows at the second floor.
The interior of Alveston Old House includes marble fireplaces, modillion cornices, and a 19th-century open-well staircase with turned balusters. The interior of Dial House has not been inspected.
