Description
The County Hotel is a pair of houses, built in 1755 and now used as a hotel. It is located on the east side of Catterick High Street. The building is constructed with roughcast render and has a concrete interlocking-tile roof. The plan is T-shaped, with two storeys and a two-bay front to the right, extending to three bays, with a rear wing. A plinth runs along the base.
The main house on the right has a central six-panel door, topped by an overlight, set within a doorcase featuring Tuscan half-columns, a frieze decorated with paterae and anthemion motifs, and a cornice. Flanking the door are segmental bow windows with sash windows containing glazing bars. These windows have fluted pilasters and anthemion capitals, with Greek key decoration on the frieze. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars and stone sills. The right end has a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping, while stepped brick stacks are visible at each end.
The house to the left has a panelled door in the second bay, above a three-pane overlight. A segmental bow window has been added to the first bay, featuring Greek key decoration on the frieze. The first floor of this section also has sash windows with glazing bars and stone sills. It also has a shaped kneeler and ashlar coping, with a stepped brick stack to the left.
The rear elevation includes a segmental bow window on the ground floor of the wing, and the date "1755" is visible on the right-hand kneeler of the wing.
Inside, the hotel features moulded cornices on the ceilings, and beams on the front ground-floor room. A cantilevered stone staircase has plain wrought-iron balusters.
