Description

Academy Buildings are two houses from the mid-18th century located on the north side of Low Green in Catterick. They are constructed of coursed rubble and topped with a 20th-century pantile roof. The buildings are two storeys high and feature four bays. The main entry is now at the rear. The corners of the buildings have quoins, and the openings are framed with ashlar surrounds that include tripartite keystones and four-pane sash windows. The surrounds on the ground floor extend down to the ground. There is cobble blocking of former doorways between the first and second windows and between the second and third windows on the ground floor. The buildings also have shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, with brick stacks located at the ends and between the second and third bays. The name "Academy Buildings" refers to the 19th-century Roman Catholic Academy of Saint Paulinus.
